From Futurecom: Interview with Franck Darmon, VP Senior Comverse LATAM
Friday, October 23, 2009 at 8:59AM From Telesemana, the official newsletter of Futurecom Brazil, a very interesting interview with Franck Darmon, VP Senior Comverse LATAM. The interview is in English, website notes and summary are in Spanish.
The interview is edited to a little over 8 minutes and is packed with information; Darmon covers a number of issues regarding industry trends and how they can be adapted to the Latin American and specifically Brazil: Converged Billing Solution, VAS Services, Mobile Internet & Mobile Advertising.
I recommend that you listen to the entire interview and I will post follow up comments with my thoughts on the interview and the points that Darmon makes.
There are many interesting and relevant points in Darmon's interview and I'd like to share my thoughts on some of them.
The first thing that caught my attention was the phrase "Increasing SMS" both in the title and summary used by Telesemana. Darmon does mention this in the interview but does not actually expand on this topic; it is an edited video so he may have done that but it is not clear if he did and if so, what he said.
Looking at usage statistics, Brazil is a country where it might SMS has not taken off. Since it was introduced as a VAS service years ago, it has shown low usage, sometimes in the single digits (refer to my post LATAM 2009: A Mosaic of Opportunities). Brazil, however, is a large country with a huge number of subscribers and understanding user behavior can be misleading if we only look at global statistics or average usage per subscriber.
So the question remains about what Darmon is proposing exactly to address the problems of low usage in Brazil and in Latin America. I will follow up with another blog post with some ideas and a proposal.
